In
1903, a small cannery, the Uchucklesaht Cannery
- the Indian word for "small spring at
head of harbour" - was built on the north
side of the inlet.
The cannery was acquired by Wallace Fisheries in 1910 and named
Kildonan, after their hometown in Scotland.
Because there was not enough level land, the village was constructed
entirely on pilings over the water.
At its height, Kildonan was home to 300 people.
In 1960, the cannery was closed and in 1962
the whole establishment was torn down and burned
for safety reasons. You can still see some of
the old pilings. |

A post office is
still operating in Kildonan (probably the smallest
in Canada) and that's why the name Kildonan
continous to appear officially.
Today's Kildonan Cannery
Lodge was built for the canneries manager
in the fourties. |
